On this day, in 1995, the e-commerce website, ‘eBay’, was founded by technology entrepreneur, Pierre Omidyar. Originally known as ‘Auction Web’ when the first item was sold, which was a broken laser pointer, the site eventually rebranded in 1997 as the platform grew in popularity, and changed its name to what we know it as today. The intention, however, had been to call the site ‘Echo Bay’, as this matched the name of the consulting firm Pierre Omidyar already owned, but as this web domain name was already in use by a gold mining company, it was shortened to ‘eBay’.
