“I recently got into Haiku in Japan and I just think it’s fantastic…” - John Lennon
Haiku is one of the tiniest writing formats, where the challenge is to express an idea and capture the essence of a moment in just seventeen syllables, laid out in three lines, that feature five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third.
They’re incredibly fun to work on, full of endless possibilities, that can produce unique pieces of work in their own right, or even inspire longer things to explore in the future.
But there’s so much more to them than that.
They’re also a great tool to use for writing exercise, that can help you learn to say things more directly, and improve your editing skills.
So with all that in mind, welcome to ‘House of Haiku’, a brand new weekly writing event, I’m co-organising in collaboration with
.Starting in April, there will be Haiku Prompts appearing each Wednesday here on ‘Tales of the Zeitgeist’, along with my interpretations of them, to offer some initial inspiration, and then it’s over to you.
We’d love to see your takes on the Prompts, which you’ll be able to leave in the Comments, and there will be a Monthly Recap showcasing your contributions over on A. C. Cargill’s publication, ‘A Literary Eye’.
Let’s have some fun writing together, and let’s turn ‘Hump Day’ into ‘Haiku Day’.
Join us in April for what will hopefully be the start of a magical and unforgettable journey.
