We couldn’t believe how hot it was.

The day had barely started, and the heat was already incredibly stifling and ridiculously oppressive.

We could feel the sweat constantly forming on our brows, and our clothes were beginning to uncomfortably stick to us.

Even moving around in it took a huge amount of effort, and quickly became exhausting.

It was almost unbearable.

And by the time midday rolled around, we were close to passing out.

Which was when the Head Chef told us that working in a busy restaurant kitchen probably wasn’t going to be the right career choice for us…

On this day, in 1983, ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ was released in cinemas across the US. Considered to be one of the greatest comedy films of all time, it follows the adventures of the Griswold family as they make a cross-country road trip to visit the Walley World amusement park, and the constant mishaps that occur along the way. Interestingly, while many films that prominently feature a car often increase sales for the depicted brand or model, it has been suggested the metallic pea green ‘Wagon Queen Family Truckster’ the family famously travel in, which was in reality a highly-customised Ford LTD Country Squire, actually led to a decline in the popularity of station wagons, because it was portrayed as being so unreliable and difficult to handle.

And so, our Prompt for this week is: VACATION

On this day, in 1977, Elvis Costello released his first album, ‘My Aim Is True’, in the UK. Considered to be one of the finest debut albums in music history, it featured the single ‘Less Than Zero’, which went on to be involved in an infamous incident on ‘Saturday Night Live’ later that year, where he had been due to promote the song, but abruptly stopped playing it after only a few bars, and launched into a performance of a new track called ‘Radio, Radio’ instead, which had not been agreed to. It got him banned from the show, and he didn’t make an appearance again until 1989.

On this day, in 2005, the movie ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ was released in the US. Directed by Tim Burton, it follows the story of a young boy called Charlie Bucket who, along with four other children, wins the chance to tour the elaborate factory of an eccentric chocolatier, played by Johnny Depp. This was the second film adaptation of the beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl, after the first had been released back in 1971. Titled ‘Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’, and starring Gene Wilder, it featured the song ‘The Candy Man’, which went on to be recorded by Sammy Davis Jr., and became his only number-one hit.

On this day, in 2022, the UK Met Office issued its first ever Red Warning for extreme temperatures, as a record-breaking heatwave pushed thermometer readings up to an unprecedented 40C. Widespread disruption soon ensued, as many public transport services and flights were suspended, and it was even reported that due to the sustained intensity of the heat, a waterfall in the Yorkshire Dales almost completely dried up.

On this day, in 1973, The British Library was established as an independent entity, having previously been part of The British Museum. It houses a copy of almost every book ever published in the UK, as well as newspapers and other media formats, along with a substantial amount of manuscripts and documents of historical interest dating back as far as 2000BC. One of the largest libraries in the world, it adds around three million new items to its collection every year, which requires an astonishing six miles of additional shelf space each time.

On this day, in 1947, a pilot called Kenneth Arnold reported spotting nine silver discs moving at an incredible speed through the air, whilst flying his private plane near Mount Rainier, in Washington State. This incident is considered to be the first widely publicized UFO sighting of the modern era, which caused interest in the possibility of extraterrestrial life to become a worldwide craze. He also described the objects he saw as being like “saucers” or “pie pans”, which led to the media calling them ‘flying saucers’, a term that has remained associated with the phenomena ever since, and has gone on to inspire countless sci-fi stories and movies.

On this day, in 1958, the iconic Wooden Roller Coaster opened at Playland, an amusement park in Vancouver, Canada. The thrilling ride is the oldest roller coaster still in operation in Canada, and has been featured in numerous TV shows and movies over the years, including ‘MacGyver’ and ‘Final Destination 3’.

On this day, in 1967, the Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival began in Marin County, which is situated in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Taking place high on the south face of Mount Tamalpais, the two-day event featured performances from artists such as Jefferson Airplane and The Doors, and is believed to have been attended by around forty thousand people. Considered to be the first rock music festival, it also marked the beginning of what came to be known as the ‘Summer of Love’, a counterculture movement, centred around freedom of expression, spiritual awakening and living in peace and harmony, which was immortalised in the Scott McKenzie song, ‘San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)’.

On this day, in 1969, the final episode of the original ‘Star Trek’ series, starring William Shatner, aired on NBC, in the US. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the incredibly innovative and groundbreaking show, that followed the adventures of the crew of the starship Enterprise as they explored strange new worlds, was cancelled after only three seasons, due to low ratings. However, after the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon took place a month later, and drew worldwide attention to the possibilities of space travel and exploration, the show became a huge success with international audiences, which ultimately led to its eventual revival through a string of popular movies, that turned its fortunes around and made it one of the biggest and most profitable franchises in entertainment history.

And so, our Prompt for this week is: STARS

Captain’s Log, 2nd June 1818

We were somewhere off the coast of Cornwall, no more than an hour into our patrol, when it happened.

A volley of cannon fire that lit up the night sky and ripped two fresh holes through the railings on our top deck, launched from a sloop we never saw coming.

Pirates.

A crew of a few dozen or so marauders, hell-bent on claiming one of His Majesty’s ships as their own.

Within moments, they were calling for our immediate surrender and shouting that we should prepare to be boarded.

We did not yield.

Instead, I gave the order to draw arms, and we prepared to stand our ground.

When the pirates saw us maneuvering into a battle formation, they were infuriated, and swiftly manned their cannons for a second strike, determined to thin our numbers.

It was then one of my men stepped forward.

Despite my insistence that he should take cover, he made his way towards one of the fresh gaps in the railings, and stood directly in the path of the sloop’s cannons.

Had I not seen what happened next with my own eyes, I would not have believed it.

We heard the cannons fire.

We saw the flash of orange light that illuminated our concerned faces.

But the cannonballs never made contact with our ship.

As soon as they left their barrels, my crewman raised both his hands out in front of him, and at his command, the cannonballs froze.

They froze in midair.

And they stayed there, hovering above the water between our two vessels for just a moment, before they rapidly plummeted out of the sky, and disappeared with a loud splash.

All the jeering and laughing about our imminent demise that had been emanating from the sloop’s direction suddenly fell silent, and the face of every pirate on board turned ashen.

With a gesture from my crewman’s hands, their sloop began to rise out of the water, before it was immediately hurled through the air, towards the rocks of a nearby cove.

It was my first encounter with one of The Gifted.

But in my official report, I will say we came across the wreckage of a small sloop during our patrol, that likely ran into difficulty trying to sail in one of the heavy storms that have been plaguing us for weeks.

There were no survivors...

On this day, in 2022, the movie ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, was released in the US, an incredible 36 years after the original film first thrilled audiences around the world. Continuing the story of a Navy fighter plane pilot, played by Tom Cruise, throughout the highs and lows of both his professional life and his personal life, the film was hailed as a true cinematic spectacle, and is widely considered to be one of the rare occasions where a sequel has surpassed the quality of its predecessor.

On this day, in 1997, U2 began filming the video for their single, ‘Last Night on Earth’, in Kansas City, Missouri. It depicts scenes of a city in apocalyptic chaos, but also ended up causing real life chaos and multiple traffic jams, due to the two major interstates and several local roads that needed to be closed during the shoot. The video is also notable for featuring the final on-screen appearance of William S. Burroughs, the legendary American writer, who famously used the ‘cut-up’ and ‘fold-in’ techniques to create many of his most revered pieces of work, and was a key part of the Beat Generation.

On this day, in 1909, the very first Giro d’Italia bicycle race began in Milan. A famously gruelling challenge, containing routes that feature the steep slopes and treacherous snow of The Alps and The Dolomites, it is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious events in cycling, second only to the Tour de France. It is also known as ‘La Corsa Rosa’ (or ‘The Pink Race’), due to the distinctive pink jersey worn to signify the current leader after each stage, and worn by the eventual winner when they appear on the podium to receive their trophy.

On this day, in 1998, Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, unveiled the first iMac computer. Primarily focussed on enabling consumers to easily access the Internet, it was launched at a time when Apple had been facing bankruptcy, due to rapidly losing their market share to Microsoft Windows based PCs. However, the phenomenal success of the innovative and iconic device quickly turned their fortunes around, and after completely revolutionising the technology landscape, the company has been setting trends ever since.

And so, our Prompt for this week is: COMPUTER

On this day, in 1770, James Cook and his crew became the first Europeans to reach the east coast of Australia, aboard their famous ship, the HMS Endeavour. He originally called the place they anchored, which is now Sydney’s primary cargo port, ‘Stingray Harbour’, because of the large amount of the flat-bodied sea creatures observed in the vicinity. However, due to the unusually high variety of new plants and flowers his botanists began discovering and documenting once they headed ashore, he eventually decided to change the name of the location to ‘Botany Bay’.

On this day, in 1978, the Gerry Rafferty song, ‘Baker Street’, first entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it eventually achieved the position of No. 2 for six weeks. Written during a period when he was frequently travelling down to London from his hometown of Paisley, in Scotland, whilst battling to extricate himself from the contracts he’d signed with his previous group, Stealers Wheel, which were preventing him from releasing new solo material, it tells the story of an individual lost in a big city, longing to be home. The song also features one of the most iconic and recognisable saxophone riffs ever recorded, which is often credited with causing a huge resurgence in the instrument’s sales and popularity.

And so, our Prompt for this week is: HOME

Seeing our front door,

Is the best view, knowing soon,

I’ll be home with you…
